Ma Weihua, the head of China Merchants Bank, was born in 1949 and has a PhD in economics from Jilin University.
Ma served as deputy chief and later the deputy party secretary of the State Development and Planning Commission Comprehensive Planning Department. He has provincial government experience from his time with the Liaoning and Anhui governments.
In 1988, he joined the People's Bank of China and served in a series of executive positions. He was deputy chief of the bank's general office and deputy director of the planning fund department. He was later made president of the bank's Hainan branch.
In 1999, he joined China Merchants Bank and became president of their head office. Ma has also directed the China Society of Finance and Banking as well as the China Association of Entrepreneurs.
