Beijing is planning to build a new airport with an annual traveler capacity of 100 million people. The new airport will become the world's largest airport hub, larger than the current Beijing Capital International Airport.

Construction for the new airport is expected to start in 2014 and will be finished in 2018. The 6-taxiway center will serve 45 million travelers each year after construction is finished and increase traveler handling capacity gradually to support 70 million by 2025.

The airport — to be located in the Daxing district of Beijing — will be treated as an international hub, according to China's State Council, which has approved the project.

The traveler handling capacity of the Beijing Capital International Airport reached 81.8 million people with 557,000 flights in 2012, surpassing London's Heathrow Airport as the world's second largest airport for the past three years, according to the Airports Council International.

The traveler handling capacity of Beijing Capital International Airport became the largest airport in China since 2009, larger than both the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport combined.
