Kweichow Moutai Company, the distiller of maotai liquor in southern China's Guizhou province, has started creating its "Greater Moutai Group," led by the provincial government.

Four local private Chinese liquor makers hand-picked by the company have finished the first round of negotiations with the company to form the group, including Guizhou Goutai Liquor Company, Guizhou Huaizhuang Jiuye Jituan Company, Guizhou Renhuai Maotai Town Hutu Wine Company and Guizhou DiaoYutai Guobin Wine Industry Company, according to China's Economic Daily.

However, Goutai Liquor is said to have expressed objections to becoming a member of the group while other three liquor makers have shown their interest. Zhang Chunxin, general manager of Goutai Liquor, said that the company wants to go public for itself instead of becoming allied with the local liquor giant.
