A piece published in Mingjing News, a New York-based website allegedly sourced by political insiders, has suggested that Zhang Weijie, a former anchorwoman for Dalian TV, gave birth to a daughter of whom Bo Xilai is the father.
She later accepted 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) in hush money from Dalian Shide Group chairman Xu Ming and now lives incognito, moving from place to place and raising her daughter alone, the article said.
After the downfall of Bo Xilai, former Communist Party chief of Chongqing, media in Hong Kong and elsewhere have suggested that the ousted official kept numerous mistresses while mayor of Dalian, a port city in northeast China. Zhang Weijie was reportedly the most famous among them.
The article said that Zhang once told her superior: "Do you have any information that you want me to convey? I'll see (Bo) Xilai tonight."
Rumors of the scandalous affair between Bo and Zhang were spreading in Dalian at the time, straining the relationship between Bo and his wife, Gu Kailai. The Mingjing piece purported that Gu used a pen name to discredit Zhang and commanded security officials to pressure her to leave the city and her job. Zhang was secretly detained in Dalian Nanshan Hotel, it said, where she attempted to commit suicide several times.
